Today is a national holiday in Japan, Marine Day I do believe. My husband and I spent yesterday and today at the beach in Onjuku. He surfs and I simply go in and out of the water or watch him catch waves. One day soon I plan to hop on the board along with him... :) Having braids make going to the beach and spending all day in the water a wonderful thing.
I initially came to Japan (Sendai, remember?) and I rocked a natural twisted out afro for a few months. Until things began to break off whenever I so much as ran my fingers through my hair. Some say it's the water, shampoo, conditioner, humidity, some say it's the change of environment, diet, etc. that one goes through when living in a new country and I say it's all of the above. Whatever the cause, a sista had to do something about her constantly dry hair and breakage (and I tried everything!).
So I called a friend in Tokyo and he introduced me to Miss Jane (this was back in 2006) and I have been going to her ever since. I am so happy to have found her. Usually, I call her one to two weeks ahead of time and schedule an appointment for Saturday morning. I like to arrive early, around 7:30AM or 8AM and once I arrive she begins. Of course, my hair is already shampooed and conditioned before arriving, so she begins and goes non-stop.
Miss Jane normally finishes around 1:30PM/2PM. She charges 15,000 YEN for braids and around 6,000-8,000 for cornrows. She also does perms, but I haven't had my hair straightened by her. I do highly recommend her for braids though because she provides the perfect touch (not too tight.) She is also very neat and professional (starts on time and doesn't stop to holla and Pooky and 'nem in between braiding your hair). And most importantly, she doesn't double book. Miss Jane is very friendly and provides a nice, warm, and cozy place to have your hair braided. The price is for braiding only, she does offer hair however the prices goes up to around 25,000 depending on the type you select.
I wore braids in DC occasionally when going to school and I usually paid around $120 or so. (I know that is probably expensive for some. African women usually shake their heads in disbelief over the prices charged for braids outside of Africa and to women who are not African.) But anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to be charged the same amount that I would pay in DC.
Miss Jane is a working woman, so she is usually available during the weekends. Her contact number is 090-1848-3331. Please tell her Takara referred you :) and she is expecting a discount the next time :) Hope it helps.
Also, the comments are open and welcome to those of you who RECOMMEND another braiding service in Tokyo :).
I'm heading to Tokyo to see my gf and will be there for about a month. Im currently in the starter phase of locs and I'm quite worried about them. Any clue as to where I can have my hair retwisted?

I rarely leavee a response, but i diid some searching and wound up here Sista in Tokyo: "Where Can I Have My Hair Done in Tokyo?"-- Braids. And I do have a few questions for you if you don't mind. Could it be simply me or does it seem like some of these comments look as if they are coming from brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are posting on additional sites, I would like to follow anything new you have to post. Would you make a list of all of your social pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
