This coming from a once Shibuya-fanatic. I used to love me some Shibuya! When I was an exchange student back in 2003, it was so exciting to just go to Shibuya crossing, stalk a spot in Starbucks until someone finally relinquished their seat and just watch people maneuver the chaotic intersection. It was GREAT! I would spend hours in the Tower Records Bookstore and I even remember going to the Shibuya Gas Panic with a few fellow study abroad students and staying out until the 1st train-- back in the day (shaking my head, LOL!) Yep, I used to love Shibuya, especially the hussle and bussle of it all! To me, it truly represented all that Tokyo had to offer.
That was then....
Now, Shibuya is the LAST place I want to go. It's just way too many people going in too many directions. It's an eye injury waiting to happen with all of those freaking umbrellas when it rains. Plus, is it just me or isn't it dirty? And, aren't the sidewalks are way to small for all of those people. It's just not a good place if you're in a hurry :) and not a good place for walking with little children.
Funny thing is, I thought G and I were the only ones who'd developed this Shibuya-aversion. Until, I was shopping with Sherley (she's kind of like my little sister here in Tokyo... but is leaving soon!) this past weekend and she had the same reaction to having to go through Shibuya.
"Shibuya?" Sherley replied with a look of shock and terror on her face. "I don't go there unless it is absolutely necessary. And even then, I'll try to come up with an alternative... it's just way too many people!"
Amen sista! My thoughts exactly!
So there you have it.... You know you've been in Tokyo too long when you'll try your best to avoid going to Shibuya. Have you guys reached this point yet?
