Your experiences remind me of when my wife and I took our two daughters (ages 8 and 12) to China. Culture shock? More like culture *stroke*!

A symptom not on your list: the conviction that everyone is out to rip you off because you're a rich westerner. You get over that one too. Another symptom: Sitting around with other culture-shock victims, drinking lots of beer and complaining about *everything*. You get over that when you realize the complaining doesn't do any good, and the beer's all gone.

Enjoy your time there--it's going to go much faster than you imagine, and yes, it will change your life.

Hello,

I happened to find this website, and I was like, "I have to respond...!" I am a Howard graduate (Japanese though) living and working in Tokyo. During my stay there, I have experienced the similar things that you are experiencing right now... Hang in there, girl, you will get along!
If you feel like talking/asking some questions about Japanese and Japan/, just e-mail me :)

Hey Takara! You don't know me, but I am friends with Yahaira Melbourne. She told me you were a friend of hers in Japan, and that maybe we could chill together some time while I am over here. I am at Okinawa Japan. Have you traveled here before? Well, I am not sure how far Tokyo is from here, but maybe some time in the future I can come there and you can show me around. I read some of your posts. You sound like you are enjoying yourself, and from one sistah to another, I am proud of you. Keep doing what you're doing, and be safe. Oh yeah, I'm in the Army on assignment to Okinawa for 3 years, so I have a while to travel. Feel free to email me whenever you like. Take care!

Yeah, it's tough but it is an experience you can never relive or recreate. The main thing i had to remember is that home really is where you make it. of course that's easy to say when i had my spouse with me. I think another symptom might be seeing sooooooooo many people who remind you of someone back home...i called it the Wizard of Oz syndrome. Know that God will never leave or forsake you and that "all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are the called according to His purpose..." (Romans 8:28)
Love you
