Yesterday I went to my little sister’s festival for the playgroup she’s in. My mother dressed me in beautiful blue kimono and I couldn’t do anything but smile, it was beautiful. She told me the names of the various pieces as she helped me get dressed. My kimono was a beautiful pastel blue with pastel pink flowers and a pink obi (belt and bow in the back). To complete the ensemble I wore black thong sandals with a red strap. When my host father saw me he said, “You look nice.” We took many pictures and my host father took video footage as well. Every time I looked around there was a camera or video camera on me. At first I didn’t mind but I began to feel weird after a while. At the festival there were other children and their parents that my little sister and little brother played with. They all tried to practice English, that was nice . Parents encouraged their children to approach me and tell me their names.
Speaking of kids, man, the parents yesterday didn’t believe in spanking their children, let alone telling them no. I had to tell so many kids not to pull my hair, take my shoe, or not to do other acts that I consider to be just plain old “you need a spanking” acts of terror . This one little boy kept picking up things, anything here could get his hands on and putting them in my face ie., bugs, long pieces of grass, sticks. Each time I took them from him and told him to stop! I was amazed that none of the adults told him to. It was really weird because if I was back home about three-fourths of the children there would have been spanked or put in time-out or something @ least five times. The parents yesterday were so patient that I was trippin’ and am still. I must admit, the entire experience made me examine child rearing and the results of various methods. I really wasn’t expecting a huge difference between American and Japanese children, so I was really surprised when I discovered that like some American children, the Japanese kids yesterday were bad as hell, or “curious and hyper” as I told one English speaking Japanese mother yesterday .
At any rate, yesterday was a really interesting episode and experience. The highlight of my night was when I was presented with a beautiful folding hand fan, blue. It is really nice. Oh yeah, there was this little boy that ran up to me and came within 2 inches of my face and just stared. So, what did I do? I stared back and looked at confused as he did. Not sure if it offended his parents or anyone else, but I really didn’t care @ that moment.
